The Steering System

Both the steering and suspension systems work closely together and even share some of the same parts. The steering system controls your car's left and right motions, while the suspension controls the up and down motions of your vehicle.

In this section, we'll see why rack and pinion has become a favorite design among manufacturers and drivers alike. We'll also learn why parallelogram steering sometimes makes more sense.

Ever wonder why you sometimes hear a screeching sound from under the hood when you turn the wheel? We'll address that and other issues in our power steering section. We'll also see how some features make driving safer and see how wheel alignment can impact how well your vehicle steers.
