The Ignition System:
Timing Is Everything
The co ordination of the explosion of the air fuel mixture and the position of the piston when it happens is what ignition timing means. For your vehicle's ignition system to work properly, a highly orchestrated series of events must happen with exacting precision.
Correct Timing
For optimal engine performance, the right amount of spark must be delivered and at exactly the right time. In addition, the air and fuel mixture must also be in the precise amounts and arrive at the exact moment is needed.
Misadjusted timing
When the timing is too advanced, the spark arrives before the air fuel mixture has reached maximum compression. The resulting explosion will not produce as much energy as a normal ignition and vehicle performance will be diminished.
Premature Ignition Early ignitions are characterized by sluggish take offs, general lack of power and rough engine performance. In addition, the insert advanced image engine may suffer from spark knock or ping. The ping may sound like light tapping inside the engine when you accelerate but may become quite loud. If left unchecked, spark knock can cause engine damage resulting in costly repairs.
Retarded Ignition
Late or retarded timing will cause the engine to under perform and lack power. Drivers often describe performance as being sluggish during acceleration. In extreme cases, a small amount of fire may be visible from the tail pipe as large amounts of previously unignited air-fuel vapors ignite within the exhaust. |
