The Exhaust System
Have An Upcoming Auto Emissions Test?
In an effort to curb pollution, some states require all licensed vehicles to pass emission tests. Folks at government-sponsored testing stations will hook up tiny sensors to your
exhaust system to monitor the amount of pollutants escaping into the atmosphere.

If your car passes, you get a clean bill of health and can renew your license plates. If your car fails, the state can refuse new plates until you get the problem corrected and retested.

The requirements vary by location, so if you move, you might want to call your local Bureau of Motor Vehicles to make sure exactly what the state expects out of your car.

Modern exhaust systems are efficient, emit few pollutants and, as long as they are properly maintained, should pass inspection with no problem. But if you have an older car or are leery about the condition of your system, it might not hurt to make a visual inspection before taking the car in to be tested.

Make sure that there are no holes and that everything is tight and properly connected. Fire the engine and listen for any excess noise that might be escaping through a pinhole leak. If everything seems in order, take your best shot at the testing station. The worst thing that could happen is that you will have to fix the problem and make another trip to the station.
