The Electrical System:
Windshield Wipers
The windshield wiper system powered by an electrical current from the battery and activated by turning on the windshield wiper switch. When activated, wipers will remain activated until the wipers are turned off and power to the wipers is cut. Even after being turned off, a wiper sensor maintains power until the wipers return to the bottom of the windshield. A rheostat switch operates the intermittent wipe delay.
 The wiper motor changes rotary motion into a back and forth wiping motion.
There are a number of wiper designs. There are similarities between your automobile steering and the motor/linkage assembly of the wipers. For instance, one type of gear assembly includes a worm gear that changes rotational torque into a back and forth movement. While another common version works similar to a rack and pinion assembly. A pinion gear rotates from right to left along a gear rack, causing the wiper arms to move back and forth.
 Wiper arm provides a rigid surface against which the blade rests and holds the wiper blade in position.
Windshield washer consists of a washer fluid tank, a pump and connecting hoses and nozzles. When activated, the pump forces fluid through the washer lines where it exists through the nozzle. Nozzles are especially designed to break up the stream to create a mist-like spray. However, nozzles can become clogged or misadjusted over time. |
