Computers and Sensors:

A thumbnail Guide to Common Sensors

Air Bag Sensor
Detect collisions and deploys the air bags

Barometric Pressure Sensor (BARO)
Measures the outside air pressure around the engine

Battery Temperature Sensor
Monitors the battery temperature to gauge the effectiveness of the charging system

Brake Switch Sensor
Detects movement of the brake pedal

Camshaft Sensor
Checks the engine camshaft rotation and position

Crankshaft Sensor
Checks the engine’s crankshaft position, speed and rotation

Cruise Control Sensor
Monitors the vehicle speed relative to the cruise control setting

Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT)
Measures the coolant temperature

Engine Speed Sensor
Measures the engine’s rpm

Exhaust Re circulation System (EGR) Sensor
Measures the position of the exhaust re circulation valve

Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor
Measures the internal fuel tank pressure as part of the EVAP system of recycling fuel vapors.

Impact Sensors
Detect collision and shut off the flow of fuel to the engine

Intake Air Temperature Sensor (IAT)
Measures the temperature of air being pulled into the engine through the intake manifold.

Knock Sensor (KS)
Detects detonation, pre ignition or engine ping so the ignition system can make adjustments for optimal engine performance

Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor (MAP)
Measures outside air pressure and compares it to vacuum inside the engine’s intake manifold

Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF)
Measures the amount of air being pulled into to the engine.

Oil Level Sensor
Measures the amount of oil in the oil pan

Oxygen Sensor (O2)
Oxygen (O2) sensors monitor levels of oxygen present in engine exhaust and transmit data back to the on board computer.

Rotational Sensor
The rotational speed sensor compares the left rear wheel to the right rear wheel. If during an emergency stop the sensor identifies one wheel locking up, it sends an electronic signal to an electronic solenoid.
