The Radio
If technology trends continue, the radio will increasingly become an important technology tool, delivering much more than news, weather and music. In fact, some radios already function more like an onboard computer. New technologies allow radios to deliver everything from satellite radio to GPS navigation, road side assistance and even internet access.
As the name suggests, the tuner allows users to “tune in” to radio stations. Tuners are the actual radio portion of a car stereo system. By adjusting the tuner setting, you are capable of receiving any station signal operating at that frequency. FM radio operates from 88-108 megahertz (MHz) and has an effective range of about 40-60 miles.
Unlike AM radio, FM is capable of delivering stereoscopic sound (stereo). While a more complex signal, it is also has a much shorter range. The more distant the signal, the more likely you will hear interference from other, more powerful signals that operate close to the same frequency.
By contrast, AM operates in a frequency range from 530-1610 kilohertz (kHz). AM frequency varies in strength (amplitude) and is transmitted at a much higher altitude. On a clear night for example, a signal might be capable of traveling to the ionosphere and bounce back to a location a thousand miles away or more. |
