3DAuto Science: Electromagnetism
An electromagnet is simply a device in which magnetism is produced when an electric current is introduced. The strength of the magnetic field produced depends on a number of variables, such as the number of coils around the iron core, the strength of the electrical current, and the magnetic permeability of the core material.
The first electromagnet was invented in 1825 by William Sturgeon. While Sturgeon's discovery occurred nearly 200 years ago, we're still applying the basic concepts in today's automobiles.

From The Workbench Of MyAutoMD:
"My Clutch Makes A Funny Sound When Its Released"
In general, a clutch is a device that uses mechanical, magnetic or friction based connections to engage or disengage two rotating parts.
The job of the clutch in a wheeled vehicle is to connect and disconnect the engine power to or from the gears and shafts that drive the wheels.
Since the internal combustion engine does not develop too much torque when it is first started, it must be disconnected from the drive mechanism until it has had time to develop enough speed and torque to start moving the vehicle.
Problem Description
The transmission is quiet in neutral with the clutch engaged but when the clutch is let out (disengaged) a strange noise is heard.
