Just in Time Learning:
What you need to know, when you need to know it!

For the first time, the majority of Americans have access to computers and the Internet and a colossal amount of information. Too frequently, the lack of contextualized information results in unfulfilled queries or inefficient searches and wasted time. What are needed are topical knowledge bases that provide succinct, contextual information that can assist individuals in making informed decisions. Just in Time Learning may offer such a solution.

Just in time learning is an emerging learning paradigm that is gaining popularity due to its focus on contextualized content delivery and potential application for rapid learning and decision support capabilities. As a phrase, Just in Time Learning draws upon its industrial roots and alludes to a revolution in the way resources are managed during the assembly process. As a manufacturing paradigm, just in time production, provides for an efficient allocation of resources, which are deployed on an as needed basis, reducing production costs, shortening manufacturing cycles and positively affecting the bottom line. Just in time manufacturing works in large part because of organizational process and materials management. Likewise, Just in Time Learning places a premium on organizational process and knowledge resource allocation.

Traditional learning régimes

Traditional learning structures are linear in form and structure. Simply put, to learn one thing, the knowledge user starts at the beginning, understanding concepts, general information and key words, as information builds in complexity and specificity. Traditional learning paradigms work well when developing cognitive relationships upon which logic and reason can then function. However, linear learning paradigms do not lend themselves to efficient decision support regimes in which information is extracted whole and transferred with a specific application in mind.

What is needed is a new approach to information architecture and the development and deployment of dynamic content that is both engaging and learner controlled. Just in Time Learning will not likely replace traditional learning any time soon, but it will provide an important channel for knowledge transfer and will likely develop into an important knowledge tool with industry-wide applications in the technical training market as well as enterprise level applications.
